Google Learning Utilities - Education

iPads are not Google-centric. iPad use is becoming widespread in schools, as is discussed on the iPads page. You will need to use the iPads for some of the instructional modules of this course, so iPads are front-loaded in this track. In some schools, iPads are proposed to replace most student needs for computing. So, you might experiment with how much of the regular Google assignments can be done with iPads. As a forewarning, the apps labeled as Google typically will allow you only to read Google Docs. However, by going in with the browser, and requesting "Desktop" access, one can use most browser-based Google services. Earth, Picasa and Sketchup are system downloads, though. Only Google Earth has an iPad app. There is a Picasa app, but it only accesses web albums and does not provide full Picasa functionality. The SketchBook app on iPad is not Google Sketchup.

Google Searching Options, News, Groups, and Maps all are browser-based services, while Earth, Picasa, and Sketchup are downloaded apps. Maps and Earth are fairly tightly linked and seem to be the natural bridge between browser-based and system-based apps. All of these modules have a textbook base. Sketchup is not covered in the text, but is a major Google app download to which you should be introduced, and it parallels Google Docs/Drawing nicely in the GAIN track. Finally, Miscellaneous Google is aptly named as an array of "little" Google apps, often little known as well, that could be very useful to you.
